Discover Nature Again

Photobucket

10 years ago when we started educating our children at home, one of the books I bought was Handbook of Nature Study by Anna Botsford Comstock.

A little back story. We used this book quite a bit the first two years of our homeschooling. We then moved to Hawaii and well, I found that it was difficult to use the book as in Hawaii there is a lack of change of seasons as well as a difference in plants, flowers, trees, etc... Looking back, I'm sure I could have worked a little harder to make the book work with us but I put the book on the shelf and left it there.

Back to present day - I'm surfing Blogger one evening, particularly my friend Mom-of-6 Musings blog, and saw that she had begun a Nature Study: the Green Hour Challenge using the Handbook of Nature along with Harmony Art Moms Handbook of Nature Study blog.

So this prompted me to pull my book off the shelf, dust it off and see if this was a possibility for our family to do some nature study again. I'm very excited to get the kids out of the house and hiking some trails here to find what of God's Creation we can find here in Virginia and how much we can learn about it.

This week we'll be doing Challenge #1 Getting Started. When we've completed this first challenge, I'll post our results (and hopefully the fun we had doing it!)

I look forward to reading about your nature study journey. We have not done much as of late. For us, the ticks put a HUGE damper on things and then life has been crazy busy. We are going camping next week. Nature study is something that maybe we can do...
